CASSELBERRY, Fla.: In a back-and-forth affair, the UW-Superior women's tennis team sneaked past Saint Ambrose, posting a 5-4 win at Red Bug Lake Park Thursday.
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./East) along with
Kitana Honkola (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) and
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) won the final two doubles matches to give the 'Jackets a 2-1 edge heading to singles. Dulong and Callaway beat Kiersten Housenga and Elizabeth Bush, 8-3, while Honkola and Wald topped Shannon McEachern and Emma Lang, 8-5.
SAU's Meg Chadick earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dulong on court one to tie the match, 2-2. Housenga gave the Bees the lead, defeating Wald by the same score.
Honkola made it 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Lang at No. 6. McEachern then beat
Mariah Linder (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), 6-3, 6-2, on court five for a 4-3 lead, before Callaway won a third-set tiebreaker to take the match at No.4.
Alison Tollas (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) clinched the match for the 'Jackets. She prevailed in a first-set tiebreak, 7-2, and went on to defeat Alex Horton on court two 6-2 in the second set to secure the win.
Win the win, Superior improves to 2-2 on the season and is back in action Friday at 10:30 a.m., against Pikeville at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
