Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) won a pair of matches foe the UW-superior women's tennis team against Pikeville, but the Yellowjackets fell, 5-4, Friday at the USTA National Campus.
After being down in the match, 2-1, after doubles play, the 'Jackets rallied to take three singles matches. Wald and
Kitana Honkola (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) tied the match, 1-1, with an 8-1 victory over Riley Mullins and Madison Daniels. Camila Agudelo and Andrea Hurtado beat
Mariah Linder (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and
Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), 8-3, for the match lead.
Ashton Jones beat
Alison Tollas (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, for a 4-1 lead after Hurtado took the top singles flight from
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), 6-0, 6-3.
Pikeville's Charlie Nijenhuis made it 5-1 with a straight-set win over
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./East) at court four.
Wald then won her second match of the day, completing a comeback on court three to take a tiebreaker, 10-6. She dropped the first set to Mullins, 6-4, and claimed the second by the same tally to cut the lead to 5-2.
Linder followed suit earning a tiebreaker win in the deciding set by a 10-8 margin over Agudelo for a 5-3 deficit. Honkola won at No.6 by default over Daniels, but the match was decided
Superior moves to 2-3 on the season and continues play in Orlando against Western New England on March 17 at 10:30 a.m.
