ORLANDO, Fla. – The UW-Superior men's tennis team ended its swing through Florida splitting a pair of matches Thursday at the USTA National Campus.
The Yellowjackets opened the day with a 9-0 loss to Concordia Wisconsin before pulling out a 5-4 victory over Springfield in the nightcap. The win against the Pride halted a four-match slide for Superior, the 'Jackets improved to 2-7 on the season with both victories coming on the spring trip.
UWS claimed two doubles matches. Both the Nos. 2 and 3 pairs of
Harry Simpson (Derby, England/Derby Moor Academy) and
Will Sherman (Baton Rouge, La./St. Michael) and
Gavin Mangan (Henderson, Nev./Basic Academy) and Brady Anderson were victorious, 8-5, to take the lead in the match.
In singles action,
Leonardo Paredes (Uberlandia, Brazil/Colegio Sao Paschoall) topped Springfield's Drew Delorenzo, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) on court two. Sherman followed with a straight-set win at No. 3 over Freddie Moffa, 6-1, 6-4. Simpson beat James Foley on court four, 6-0, 6-2.
Against Concordia, the 'Jackets battled well, but came up short.
Josiah Borst (Becker, Minn./Becker) took the Falcons' Christian Doctor to a deciding third set at No. 1 singles, but fell, 11-9.
Simpson and Sherman dropped an 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles and Gabe Binversie and Cole Werning, 8-6.
Superior opens UMAC play at home against Martin Luther March 30. First serve at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse is slated for 1 p.m.
