BLOOMINGTON, Minn.: The Yellowjacket men's tennis team improved to 6-8 overall on the season and remained perfect in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play following a 9-0 sweep over Minnesota Morris Saturday.
The matches were supposed to be played at Morris at the end of March, but inclement weather forced the postponement. Rescheduled for Morris, the teams were again forced to adjust, this time moving to the Twin Cities to play indoors after an April blizzard buried tennis courts and other athletic facilities around the Upper Midwest.
The Yellowjackets got things rolling on a positive note Saturday, taking all three of the doubles matches by identical 8-2 scores. The top pairing of
Josiah Borst (Becker, Minn./Becker) and
Leonardo Paredes (Uberlandia, Brazil/Colegio Sao Paschoall) rebounded from a loss to Saint Mary's Wednesday by taking down the Cougars' top team of Jack Flicker and Cole Peters. The second pairing of
Harry Simpson (Derby, England/Derby Moor Academy) and
Grady Hauswirth (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Senior) defeated Morris' Franklin Real and Kenny Knudson. Closing out the doubles, the Yellowjackets' third pairing of
Gavin Mangan (Henderson, Nev./Basic Academy) and Anthony Michels defeated Kyler Cooper and Gannon Youakim.
With a solid lead in tow, the Yellowjackets turned their attention to the singles matches, and the Yellowjackets were equally as dominant there.
Borst did battle with Flicker, and just like in doubles Borst got the best of his opponent in the singles, defeating Flicker 6-4, 6-0. Paredes dominated Peters at No. 2 singles, defeating him 6-0, 6-1. After a difficult day Wednesday against Saint Mary's,
Will Sherman (Baton Rouge, La./St. Michael) bounced back nicely Saturday, winning No. 3 singles over Knudson 6-0, 6-2.
Petar Bulatovic (Podgorica, Montenegro/Lee Academy) moved up to No. 4 singles Saturday and earned a victory, defeating Youakim 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 5 singles Carter Lamont had little difficulty with Jason Vang, defeating him 6-1, 6-0. Then, Min June Jang completed the sweep for the Yellowjackets, defeating Cooper 6-2, 6-1.
Saturday's matches were the final road matches of the season, as the Yellowjackets will be at home the rest of the way beginning with a home match against Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica Wednesday, March 17.
