SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior men's tennis team took its first loss in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Thursday, falling, 7-2, to St. Scholastica.
The match was originally suspended due to rain Wednesday with the Saints up, 2-1, after doubles, and completed Thursday at the Yellowjackets Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Serhii Tykhonenko and Rafa Gonzalez beat
Josiah Borst (Becker, Minn./Becker) and
Leonardo Paredes (Uberlandia, Brazil/Colegio Sao Paschoall) at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, before the pair of
Gavin Mangan (Henderson, Nev./Basic Academy) and
Brady Anderson (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-4 victory against Anton Sopin and Jack Kearney on court three.
Harry Simpson (Derby, England/Derby Moor Academy) and
Will Sherman (Baton Rouge, La./St. Michael) then took Elliot Schneider and Jake Jolowsky to a tiebreaker at 8-7. Simpson and Sherman fell in those extra points, 7-4, before rain halted play for the day.
Gonzalez won by default over Sherman at No. 3 singles as the Saints took a 3-1 lead in the match on Thursday.
Simpson topped Sopin, 6-2, 6-1, to close the Yellowjackets to within 3-2.
St. Scholastica won the final four matches to cement the win, but it wasn't without a fight from Superior.
Borst took Tykhonenko to a third-set tiebreaker, falling, 10-8. He had won the first set in a 12-10 tiebreaker.
Petar Bulatovic (Podgorica, Montenegro/Lee Academy) and Anderson each played third-set tiebreakers, but the Saints won both. Bulatovic's 10-3 loss in the third against Kearney gave St. Scholastica the win.
With the victory, CSS improves to 11-7 and 6-1 in the UMAC. With the loss, the 'Jackets fall to 6-9 and 4-1 in league play.
