VIRGINIA, Minn. – St. Scholastica handed the UW-Superior women's tennis team its first loss of the season in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play with a 9-0 setback at the Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Club on Wednesday.
The Saints won all but one set as they improved to 13-6 overall and 5-0 in the league. The loss dropped the Yellowjackets to 7-7 and 4-1 in the UMAC.
Kitana Honkola (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) and
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) put up the best fight in doubles, falling on court three to Madilyn Jankila and Taylor Hays, 8-6.
Mariah Linder (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and
Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) dropped an 8-4 decision to St. Scholastica's Elizabeth Fink and Brynne Hauer at No. 2.
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./East) opened the day with an 8-2 defeat to Katelyn Rice and Sara Wennerstrand.
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./East) claimed the 'Jackets' only set in singles, taking the first set of her No. 3 match with Rice, 6-2. Rice came back to win the match with second-set and third-set tiebreak victories, 6-4 and 10-8, respectively.
Wald won a combined seven games on court four against Fink, earning four in the first set.
Mariah Linder (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) was shut out in her first set with Brynne Hauer on five, but took four games of the second before Hauer prevailed.
Dulong won two games in the first set and one in the second on court one against Elise Hauer.
Other victories went to Wennerstrand over
Alison Tollas (Ashland, Wis./Ashland), 6-2, 6-0, and Jankila over Honkola, 6-0, 6-1.
Superior returns to action Friday, April 26 at 4 p.m., hosting Northwestern at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.
