SUPERIOR, Wis. – Team Buzz won four of the first five singles matches and the final six matches overall to cruise to an 11-3 victory over Team 'Jackets in the UW-Superior tennis Yellowjacket Super Series contest Friday at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.
The teams played singles matches to four games and doubles to eight.
Preston Vogel (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) topped
Scott Young (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines), 4-0, 4-0 to open play before
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) evened the score with a 4-1, 4-1 win over
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior).
With Team Buzz up, 2-1,
Anthony Michels (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) outlasted
Reier Sjomeling (Delano, Minn./Delano), 2-4, 4-2, 10-7, in three sets to earn a key point for his squad. Kayla Christianson then topped
Ririko Miura (Chiba City, Japan/Toho Senior), 10-5, 10-3 to give Buzz a three-match advantage at 4-1.
Sydney Hill (Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior)s cut the deficit to 4-2 with a three-set win over
Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert), winning the tiebreaker, 10-6, after taking the first set, 4-3, and dropping the second, 4-1.
Michael Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) put away
Spencer Carey (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia), 4-1, 4-0 prior to
Carter LaMont (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) dispatching Angel Pere, 4-0, 4-0, to pull Team 'Jackets to within 5-3. Team Buzz secured the final six matches, including all five in doubles – to nail down the victory
