SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's tennis team opened the 2020 season Saturday with an 8-1 loss to Division II Minnesota Duluth at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Yellowjackets' only point of the day came from senior
Alison Tollas (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) at No. 2 singles. She beat UMD's Elsa Erikson, 6-3, 6-3, to get her team on the scoreboard.
All nine matches were won in straight sets. Junior
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) took four games in her match with Natalie Cahill on court three, including three in the second set.
Freshman Brenna Wienen took two games from Isabel Thiner, falling 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. Sophomore
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./East) and senior
Maura Halverson (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) each won a game off of their opponents at Nos. 1 and 6. Junior
Kitana Honkola (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) also claimed a game in the second set of her singles match with Sophie Lynch on four.
UMD (2-0) swept doubles as Lynch and Cahill topped Wald and Honkola, 8-1, Megan Anderson and Thiner beat Halverson and Wienen, 8-2, and Mallory Lithun and Emily Rahrik topped Tollas and sophomore
Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) by the same score.
The matched marked the debut of UWS first-year head coach
CeeJay Schaffner.
