WINONA/LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The UW-Superior men's tennis team began the 2020 season with pair of matches Sunday at St. Mary's and St. Thomas. The Yellowjackets dropped a 6-3 decision to the Cardinals and fell, 8-1, to the Tommies.
Against Saint Mary's, UWS found itself in all three doubles matches.
Will Sherman (Baton Rouge, La./St. Michael) and
Harry Simpson (Derby, England/Derby Moor Academy) defeated Brandon Kurilla and Trevor Smiley, 8-6, to get on the scoreboard on court 1. Michael James and
Lorenzo Korehisa Silva (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Singular-Santo Andre) lost, 8-5, to Robbie Sobczak and Gabe Graves after
Grady Hauswirth (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Senior) and
Gavin Mangan (Henderson, Nev./Basic Academy) took Nolan Smiley and Josh Janssen to a tiebreaker, losing 8-7.
Freshman Janes won his debut at No. 1 singles over Sobczak, 6-4, 7-5, and fellow freshman Korehisa Silva topped Nolan Smiley, 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 at No. 6.
Sophomore
Carter LaMont (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) took Trevor Smiley to a third set, before falling 10-6. LaMont won the first set, 6-4, and dropped the second, 3-6.
The Tommies swept doubles and led the second match of the day, 7-0, before Janes won again on the top flight. Janes took out Jordan Schenck in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 for the 'Jackets' point.
Superior returns to action when it hosts Concordia (Minn.) next Sunday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m., at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.
