MADISON, Wis. – Following a 10-win improvement from 2018-19 and spot in the conference semifinals, the UW-Superior women's hockey team placed two players on the 2019-20 All-WIAC Women's Hockey Team, the league announced Thursday.

Senior Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) and sophomore Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) were named All-WIAC, while senior Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) and junior Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines), along with sophomore goaltender McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) were honorable-mention selections.

Sophomore forward C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) was the Yellowjackets' representative on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Martinson saved her best season for last, leading the WIAC with 26 goals and finishing second with 36 points. She also was tied for ninth in the league with 10 assists.

Martinson, a four-time All-WIAC choice, also led the league – and nation – with four short-handed goals, was third in the conference with four game-winning goals and tied for fifth with three power-play goals.

She was named Kwik Trip WIAC Athlete of the Week Dec. 17 for the second time in her career.

Martinson averaged 0.96 goals and 1.33 points per game this season, marks that are currently second and tied for 16th, respectively, in NCAA Division III.

She finished her career with 102 points on 65 goals and 37 assists in 108 games. She ranks second in program history goals and third in points.

Byfuglien was a steady force on the blue line for the 'Jackets this season. In 27 games, she led a defense corps that allowed 25.8 shots and 1.9 goals per game. She scored two goals and added eight assists for 10 points and posted a plus-10 rating.

Both of her goals were game winners, against UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 23 and Bethel on Jan. 14.

Shelton led the team with 17 assists, tied for fourth in the league, and was second with 22 points, skating in all 27 games this season.

Shelton had a seven-point weekend at Northland Feb. 21-22 to close the regular season with a career-high-tying four assists the first night and two goals and an assist the next in a pair of 5-1 wins.

She scored one power-play goal, one short-handed goal and one game-winning goal on the season with a plus-16 rating.

Shelton finished her career with 21 goals and 50 assists for 71 points in 108 games. She is tied for sixth in program history in assists.

Sergent scored eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 26 games this season. She posted two two-goal games and five with multiple points, including two goals and three assist against the LunberJills on Nov. 22.

Whalen went 8-3-0 with a 1.44 goals-against average and .947 save percentage in 11 starts in goal. She earned her first two career shutouts – both 1-0 – against Bethel Jan. 14 and at UW-Stevens Point Feb. 14.

Whalen backstopped the 'Jackets to a 2-1 home win over then-No. 7 UW-River Falls, 2-1, on Jan. 25, making 35 saves. She matched her career high with 39 against Gustavus Adolphus Feb. 18.

She was named Kwik Trip WIAC Athlete of the week twice – Jan. 28 and Feb. 18.

Hayes registered seven goals and six assists for 13 points in 27 games as a sophomore. She scored consecutive game-winning goals at St. Scholastica Dec. 10 and versus St. Catherine Dec. 13. She also scored a power-play goal at UWRF on Jan. 23.
