Yellowjackets Sweep Major Awards, Seven Named All-UMAC in Women’s Soccer

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's soccer team swept all four major awards with seven Yellowjackets earning honors as the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference announced its all-conference teams on Tuesday. 
 
Sophomore forward Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) was named UMAC Player of the Year, senior defender Erin Schoborg (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) claimed UMAC Defensive Player of the Year and freshman goalkeeper Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) earned UMAC Rookie of the Year. Fifth-year head coach Allison DeGroot was selected as UMAC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season. The three players were also named to the All-UMAC First Team.
 
Also named to the first team was senior Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) in the midfield and freshman defender Halle Carlson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown). Sophomore Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) was a second-team selection at forward and sophomore midfielder Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline) was an honorable-mention pick.
 
Senior defender Claire Smith (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) was the Yellowjackets representative on the UMAC Sportsmanship Team.
 
Wilson is eighth in the NCAA in goals (20), sixth in points (51) and ninth in assists (11). She also ranks third in the country with eight game-winning goals. Finally, Wilson is 26th nationally in assists per game at 0.52. The UMAC honors are the second and third for Wilson as she was a second-team choice last spring.
 
Wilson scored a career-high four goals in a 6-1 victory over Minnesota Morris on Oct. 2. She also earned consecutive UMAC Offensive Player of the Week awards on Sept. 7 and 13.
 
Schoborg anchored a backline that surrendered just 16 goals for 0.73 per match, the 59th best mark in the NCAA. She was part of 10 clean sheets while appearing in 20-of-21 matches and playing the fourth most minutes on the team at 1,511.
 
Lang started 19-of-21 matches in net for UWS, compiling a 16-2-1 record and .588 goals-against average and .892 save percentage with four shutouts. Lang currently ranks 15th in the country in save percentage. 
 
Lang was UMAC Defensive Player of the Week three times this season – Nov. 1, Oct. 11, and Sept. 27.
 
She made a season-high 15 saves at UW-Stout on Sept. 15.
 
DeGroot has led the Yellowjackets to their best season in program history with UWS currently riding a school-record 17-match unbeaten streak at 16-0-1. The 'Jackets also went 2-0-1 against conference-power Northwestern this season, earning their first win over the Eagles since Sept. 16, 1997 with a 3-0 road win on Oct. 8.
 
DeGroot's Yellowjackets are currently ninth nationally in goals (69), fourth in points (203), and second in assists (65). Defensively, UWS has pitched 11 shutouts. She was also UMAC Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2020.
 
Schussman, Superior's all-time leader in career goals scored, has 15 this season to rank 28th in the NCAA in the category. She is also fifth nationally in assists (12) and 14th in points (42). Finally, she is 19th in the country in assists per game at 0.55. 
 
Schussman was UMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 1 after scoring the game winner and regular-season-title-clinching goal in a 4-1 victory at Minnesota Morris on Oct. 29. 
 
Schussman became the program leader in career goals in the UMAC semifinal win against the Cougars with a 57th-minute tally to make it a 3-0 match. The 'Jackets went on for a 6-0 victory and a date with UNW in the championship. Schussman enters the NCAA tournament with 34 career goals.

Carlson has started 20-of-22 matches, scoring one goal and two assists. She scored her first collegiate goal in a 4-0 victory at Northland on Sept. 18 and added assists against Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 24 an Crown on Oct. 1.
 
The first-team selection is the third consecutive of Schussman's career. She was a second-team pick as a freshman in 2018.
 
Alessi started all 20 matches she appeared in scoring eight goals and four assists for 20 points. She is third on the team in goals and game winners (two). 
 
Alessi was UMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25 after scoring four goals in a 2-0-1 week for UWS. She scored both goals in Superior's 2-1 victory over St. Scholastica on Oct. 19, marking the team's second win over the Saints in school history.
 
She was also a second-team selection as a freshman in the spring.
 
Schendel started all 22 matches in the midfield, scoring a goal and an assist. She scored in a 3-0 win over Northland at home on Oct. 12 and added an assist on Schussman's 14th-minute goal against Northwestern in the UMAC championship on Saturday.
 
Schendel was named UMAC Rookie of the Year and to the All-UMAC Second Team last season.
 
Smith appeared in 18 matches, starting 17 times, scoring a goal and five assists out of the back. She had a goal and assist in a 2-1 double-overtime win over Edgewood on Sept. 12, and also picked up two assists against Crown on Oct. 1.
 
UWS (18-3-1), off to the first NCAA tournament in the 29-year history of the program, faces top-seeded St. Catherine in the NCAA St. Paul Regional Saturday at 11 a.m.
