More Heroics From Sergent Help 'Jackets Salvage Tie

12/11/2021 4:30:00 PM

Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. – Friday night the Yellowjacket women's hockey team needed some third period heroics to take down St. Catherine and earn a win on the road, and in the process snap a three-game losing streak. Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) led the charge, scoring three of the four third-period goals for the Yellowjackets.

Saturday afternoon the teams met again, this time at Wessman Arena. For the second straight game the Yellowjackets needed a hero in the third, and for the second time in as many games it was the super senior getting it done.

Down 3-1 entering the final period, Sergent scored twice, the second goal coming with just 10.1 seconds to play in regulation, tying the game at 3-3 and forcing overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, the game will go in the books as a tie, but the Yellowjackets can claim victory after outscoring St. Kate's in the shootout, 2-0.

The game caps a big weekend for Sergent, who scored five goals in helping the Yellowjackets (5-5-1, 1-2-0 WIAC) go into the break on a positive note.

St. Kate's got the scoring started early when Laura Denchfield's wrist shot beat Yellowjacket goaltender Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) down low just 1:13 into the game.

The Yellowjackets came back and tied the game on the power play at 12:09 of the first period. C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) got the goal, picking up her first of the year on assists from Agnese Apsite (Dreilini, Latvia/Riga Distance Secondary) and Jamie Davison (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) to make it a 1-1 game. Davison started the play at the blue line, fed Apsite in the left circle who played it quickly to the right of the goal where Hayes hammered it home.

Less than two minutes later the Wildcats regained the lead on a goal by Marie Reimer at 13:46. They would increase the lead to 3-1 when Kaitlyn Blair scored shorthanded at 9:06 of the second period.

It took a while, but the Yellowjackets would pull to within one at 14:04 of the third period when Sergent connected on a wrist shot from right circle, beating St. Kate's goaltender Karly Schmidt on the stick side to make it a 3-2 game. Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) and Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) assisted.

With under two minutes to play the Yellowjackets pulled their goaltender and had the puck moving around the offensive zone. It came to Sergent between the circles and her wrist shot beat Schmidt with 10.1 on the clock to even the score and force overtime. Curtis and Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) assisted.

In the 3-on-3 overtime the Yellowjackets had chances to win the game outright, with Hayes and Sergent hitting the crossbar. The 'Jackets had the better chances of the extra session, but they weren't able to finish it off and went to the shootout.

After a St. Kate's miss, Apsite scored. Then, after a second miss by St. Kate's, Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored, giving the 'Jackets the win.

Beeman had a strong performance in goal Friday and made the start again Saturday. She made eight saves on 10 shots in the first period but was pulled in favor of McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks). Whalen went the rest of the way and stopped 15 of the 16 shots she faced.

The Yellowjackets will now have an extended break and return to action Friday, Jan. 7 on the road at St. Benedict. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Dave Torrey Arena in St. Cloud, Minn.
