SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior men's tennis team opened the 2021 season without dropping a set in a 9-0 non-conference victory over Martin Luther at Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse on Sunday.
The Yellowjackets took all three doubles matches as
Michael Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) and
Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) defeated Jonah Schultz and Seth Koelpin, 8-1.
Gus Rasmussen (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and
Reier Sjomeling (Delano, Minn./Delano) then outlasted Benjamin Foss and Josiah Wordell, 8-7 (10-8) and
Anthony Michels (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) and
Gavin Mangan (Henderson, Nev./Basic Academy) dispatched Eric Fluegge and Jonathan Marquardt, 8-3.
Janes surrendered just two games to Schultz to begin singles action for a 4-0 UWS lead in the match, before
Carter LaMont (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) shut out Koelpin, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Potz Nagy withstood an early charge from Foss for a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court two to give the 'Jackets a 6-0 advantage.
Sjomeling made it 7-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fluegge prior Rasmussen topping Wordell, 6-2, 6-3.
Clayton Tanner (Waseca, Minn./Waseca Senior) closed out the match for UWS with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Marquardt.
The 'Jackets are back in action Saturday at UW-Eau Claire. First serve at the John and Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center is slated for 11 a.m.
