SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to Minnesota Morris in non-conference action at Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse on Sunday.
With the match tied, 4-4, going into the final singles pairing of the day at No. 6, the Yellowjackets'
Grace Nelson (New London, Wis./New London) and Megan Tschida went the distance. Nelson took the first set, 6-2, but dropped the second, 6-4, setting up a third-set tiebreaker. Tschida was victorious there, 10-7, sealing the comeback win for the Cougars.
Superior won 2-of-3 doubles matches to begin the day.
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) and
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) and
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) and
Olivia Roberts (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) each beat their opponents, 8-4.
Callaway outlasted the Cougars' Kate Obright, 7-5, 1-6 10-5 on court one to give her team a 3-2 lead in the match, but Megan Arens beat Roberts, 6-0, 6-3 to knot the match at 3-3.
Abby Burquest then beat
Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior), 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 for a 4-3 edge before Owa defeated Kiley Rodarmel, 75, 6-4 to set up the decisive match.
