SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior men's tennis team fell, 6-3, to UW-La Crosse on Sunday in its first outdoor match of the 2021 season.
The Yellowjackets tied the match, 1-1, as
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and
Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) won at No. 2 doubles over Alex Alt and Alex Moore, but UWS went into singles action down, 2-1, as Cole Contardi and Sam Diedrich topped
Carter LaMont (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) and
Gavin Mangan (Henderson, Nev./Basic Academy), 8-1.
Diedrich made it 3-1 with a victory over Zacharias at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1. Charlie Parish gave the Eagles a three-point lead with a win over
Lorenzo Korehisa Silva (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Singular-Santo Andre), 6-1, 6-2.
LaMont lost to Joshua Williams 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. Luiz de Melo Guedes then beat Contardi, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) on court three, and
Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) defeated Peterson, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) to pull UWS within 5-3, but
Michael Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) fell to Alt, 6-4, 6-7 (9-11), 0-1 (7-10) to close the match.
The 'Jackets drop to 3-2 on the season while UW-La Crosse improves to 5-1.
Superior returns to action traveling to Rogers, Minn., to take on Hamline April 3 at 10 a.m.
