MANKATO, Minn. – The UW-Superior men's tennis team blanked Bethany Lutheran, 9-0, on the road at Mankato East High School on Saturday, earning its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory of the season.
Michael Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) and
Gus Rasmussen (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) opened the match with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles against Niklas Kasa and Noah Gernander.
Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) and
Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) then beat Marcos Borobia Arias and Javier Lopez Billon, 8-3, on court one before
Preston Vogel (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) and
Reier Sjomeling (Delano, Minn./Delano) defeated Brock Aaker and Jim Olson by the same score.
Rasmussen made it 4-0 Yellowjackets with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Genander at No. 4 singles. Potz Nagy surrendered just one game in the second set at No. 2 against Kasa to clinch the match for UWS.
Janes had the closest match of the day at No. 1. He lost the first set to Borobia Arias, 3-6, prior to winning the next two, 6-1 and 10-7, for Superior's sixth point. Zacharias then beat Aacker in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 and Sjomeling blanked Samuel Liffengren, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
Clayton Tanner (Waseca, Minn./Waseca Senior) closed the match with a 6-1, 7-5 win versus Lopez Billon at No. 5.
With the win, UWS improves to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the league.
The 'Jackets return home to host Crown Sunday at 2 p.m.
