MANKATO, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's team earned a 6-3 win at Bethany Lutheran Saturday in its first UMAC action of the season.
The Yellowjackets won two doubles matches as
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) and
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) topped Shoshana Bruner and Emma Newton, 8-6, on court one, and
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) and Kayla Christianson beat Lauren Zimmerman and Karena Verbitsky, 8-2, on three. BLC's No. 2 pair of Emma Carmichael and Kaitlyn Berreau defeated
Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior) and
Grace Nelson (New London, Wis./New London), 8-1.
Carmichael beat Nelson to begin singles play, winning 7-5, 6-1, at No. 5 to tie the match, 2-2. The 'Jackets, though, won four of the final five matches of the day to ensure the victory.
After the Vikings took a 3-2 lead courtesy of Audrey Peterson's three-set win over Olson on four, Owa tied things again with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 versus Berreau. Wald then outlasted Newton, 2-6, 6-1, 10-3, at No. 2 for a 4-3 Superior lead in the match.
Callaway made it 5-3 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bruner on the top flight before Christianson beat Verbitsky, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6 to close the match.
UWS improves to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the league with the victory and will return home to face Crown Sunday at 2 p.m.
