SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's tennis team took its first loss of the season in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Thursday with a 7-2 defeat to St. Scholastica at the Yellowjackets Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Sophomore
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) earned both of the Yellowjackets' points on the day, winning 8-5 at No. 1 doubles with junior partner
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo), and at No. 1 singles in three sets over Julia Maier. Callaway dropped the first set in singles, 0-6, prior to winning 6-2 and 10-7 in a tiebreaker to pull her team within 4-2. The Saints, though, won the final three singles matches of the day – at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 – to ensure the victory.
Callaway and Wald, who are 4-1 overall as a doubles tandem and have won their last four matches together, topped the duo of Maier and Madilyn Jankila.
The Saints No. 3 pair of Maya Nibbe and Hannah Loewen beat
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) and
Olivia Roberts (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander), 8-3, to take a 2-0 lead in the match after Ava Warren and Emily Carpenter shut out
Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior) and
Grace Nelson (New London, Wis./New London), 8-0 on court two.
Warren then beat Olson at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1 and Janika beat Wald, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2, pushing the CSS lead to 4-1.
Nibbe got past Owa, 6-4, 6-3 on three while Maria Valentini took care of Nelson, 6-0, 6-2, on court five. Julia Ellefsonclosed the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over
Autumn Leseman (Eveleth, Minn./Virginia) at No. 6.
UWS is now 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the UMAC and CSS is 5-4 and 4-0.
The 'Jackets next head to St. Cloud, Minn., to face Martin Luther Sunday at 1 p.m.
