SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's tennis team closed the regular season with a 8-1 home defeat to Northwestern Wednesday at the Yellowjackets Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Reigning UMAC Player of the Week
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) earned Superior's only point on the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Mafee Rinta at No. 1 singles.
Callaway and
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) lost to Rinta and Belinda Weddle at No. 1 doubles, falling 8-6.
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) took a set from Jessica Gross at No. 3 singles, ultimately falling 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.
Wald also took Weddle to a second-set tiebreak, but Weddle prevailed, 7-3, to win their match at No. 2, 6-4, 7-6.
Northwestern clinched the regular-season UMAC title at 6-0 with the win.
The Yellowjackets (5-8, 3-3 UMAC) enter the UMAC tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host fifth-seeded Bethany Lutheran Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
