SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the UMAC tournament with an 8-1 victory over Bethany Lutheran at the Yellowjackets Outdoor Tennis Complex on Saturday.
UWS won all three doubles matches as
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) and
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) beat Shoshana Bruner and Emma Newton, 8-2 at No. 1,
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) and
Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior) topped Kaitlyn Berreau and Audrey Petersen at No. 2, 8-1, and
Olivia Roberts (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and Kayla Christianson defeated Karena Verbitsky and Lauren Zimmerman, 8-2, at No. 3.
Owa took care of Berreau, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 3 singles for a 4-0 lead in the match.
Grace Nelson (New London, Wis./New London) clinched it for the 'Jackets with a victory over Zimmerman by the same score at No. 6.
Verbitsky got the Vikings on the scoreboard with 6-2, 6-4 win against Roberts at No. 5, but Superior was in control from there. Olson outlasted Peterson, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 at No. 4, while Wald (6-2, 6-2) and Callaway (6-1, 6-0) dispatched Newton and Bruner, respectively, to finish the match.
UWS improves to 5-8 on the year and will travel to face Northwestern Wednesday at 4 p.m., for the semifinals.
