STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's tennis team opened the season splitting a pair of matches against Ripon and UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. The Yellowjackets topped the Red Hawks, 7-2, in their first match of the day and dropped the nightcap to the Pointers, 8-1.

Against Ripon, won two doubles matches with
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) and
Kaytlyn Syverson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) defeating Hannah Ryback and Tia Endrizzi, 8-7 (7-2) at No. 1 and
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) and
Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior) beating Tamera Holland and Chase Polyak on court three.

Shelby Hanson (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior) and
Olivia Roberts (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) dropped an 8-5 decision at No. 2.

Freshman
Lainey Zurn (Almena, Wis./Barron) made it 3-1 with a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 victory over Halle Hadel to open singles action at No. 5. Other wins came from
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) over Ryback at No. 1, 6-1, 6-3 and Owa, 6-2, 6-2, over Endrizzi at No. 2.

Syverson also beat Holland, 6-4, 6-3, on court four while Olson beat Emma Ziebel, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 6.

The Yellowjackets only win against the Points came from Syverson at No. 4 singles. She outlasted Grace Henes, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (8-6).  Superior won 13 games in the other eight matches. Owa put up a fight in the second set of her No. 2 singles match with Kaitlyn Hess winning four games to lead the Superior effort.

UWS (1-1) returns to action in the ITA Midwest Regional, Sept. 24-26 in Whitewater, Wis.
