Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's tennis team opened play in its first-ever ITA Midwest Regional tournament Friday in Whitewater, Wis., and the surrounding area.
 
Senior Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) topped Elena Bourget of UW-Eau Claire, 6-3, 6-0, to advance in the ITA singles draw. She then dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to 13th-seeded Natasha Bailey of UW-La Crosse.
 
Also in ITA singles, freshman Kaytlyn Syverson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) fell to Simpson's Emily King, 6-2, 6-0.
 
In the ITA doubles draw, Callaway and Syverson lost to Irene Agusti and Sydney Marin from Grinnell, 8-0.
 
Freshman Shelby Hanson (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior) fell in the Midwest Singles draw, 6-1, 6-0, to Josie Carlson of Gustavus Adolphus. Classmate Lainey Zurn (Almena, Wis./Barron) lost to Bethel's Mary Voss, 6-2, 6-1.  Sophomore Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior), fell, 6-1, 6-3, to Bella Tranquilino of Simpson. Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior) lost to Taylor Hopkins of Hamline, 6-0, 6-3.
 
In Midwest doubles action, Hanson and Zurn fell to Caroline Hutchinson and Gabby Flynn of Wartburg, 8-2. Owa and Olson fell to a pair from Northwestern, 8-4. 
 
The Yellowjackets continue play in the doubles back draw Saturday at 9 a.m.
