ORLANDO, Fla. -- The UW-Superior men's tennis team split a pair of matches Wednesday at Sanlando Park, grabbing a 6-3 victory over UW-La Crosse, before falling, 7-0, to No. 39 Carthage.
The Yellowjackets won their first-ever match against UW-La Crosse to start the day. UWS (3-4) won at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles as the tandems of
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and
Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) and
Michael Janes and
Keisuke Satobeat their opposition 8-4, respectively.
Luiz de Melo Guedes, Potz Nagy Sato and
Jace Gilbertson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) all won in singles action. Luiz de Melo Guedes beat Grant Counts, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 on court two.
Potz Nagy topped Lincoln Maher, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 and Sato beat Alex Ungar, 6-2, 6-4 on four.
Gilbertson defeated J.T. Dillion at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Carthage handled Superior in the second match of the day. With Luiz de Melo Guedes winning the most games of any UWS singles player -- five -- from the Firebirds' No. 1 Daniel Moore in a 6-1, 6-4 loss.
Sato took two games in each set from Myles Krzewinski at No. 3, as well.
The Yellowjackets are off Thursday. They return to the court with two more matches Friday against Franciscan and Colby-Sawyer.
