DULUTH, Minn. -- The UW-Superior women's tennis team traveled across the bridge to take on Minnesota Duluth Friday morning at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center, falling, 9-0.
The Yellowjackets (1-11) took just 17 games from the NCAA Division II Bulldogs (3-8) on the day.
For UWS, the day was highlighted by the return to the court of senior
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior), who was named first-team All UMAC in 2019 and was last part of the team in 2020. Dulong played No. 1 doubles with partner
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) against UMD's Shay Callaway and Mallory Lithun, dropping an 8-3 decision.
Freshmen
Shelby Hanson (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior) and
Lainey Zurn (Almena, Wis./Barron) fell in their No. 3 encounter with Olivia Honsey and Laura Palmer, 8-1, and freshman
Kaytlyn Syverson and junior
Kallie Olsonlost, 8-3, to Abby Johnson and Isabel Thiner to wrap up doubles.
Lithun beat Syverson, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles for a 4-0 UMD lead, before Thiner topped Owa, 6-0, 6-0, on court three.
Hanson lost, 6-1, 6-2, to Palmer at No. 4 while
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) lost to her sister, Shay, 6-2, 6-2, on court one.
Amanda Hanowski made it 8-0 with a 6-0, 6-2, defeat of Zurn and Honsey closed the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Olson.
UWS next opens Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Sunday against Martin Luther. First serve at Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse is set for 1 p.m.
