SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The UW-Superior women's tennis team opened Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play with a 9-0 victory against Martin Luther at Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse on Sunday.
The Yellowjackets (2-11, 1-0 UMAC) began the match by sweeping all three doubles matches.
Maya Callaway and
Shelby Hansontopped McKenzey Crowley and Tatum Schulz, 8-2,
Chiyono Owa and
Megan Dulongbeat Charis Glende and Sarah Hoffe, 8-2, and
Kaytlyn Syverson and
Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior) defeated Abigail Schewe and Katie Kutz, 8-4.
In singles, Callaway and Dulong did not drop a game to their opponents at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, and Syverson dispatched Josephine Bieberitz on court two, 7-5, 6-1.
Owa beat Glende at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2, while Hanson outlasted Hoffe, 6-2, 5-7 10-8.
Lainey Zurn (Almena, Wis./Barron) closed the match with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 6.
The Knights fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the league with the loss.
The same teams meet again Saturday at 1 p.m., in New Ulm, Minn.
