SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The UW-Superior men's tennis team won its third consecutive match over Northwestern with a 5-4 triumph at the Yellowjackets Outdoor Tennis Complex on Wednesday.
The Yellowjackets, who improved to 12-5 overall and 6-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, won a pair of doubles matches and three in singles play to earn the victory. UWS can even the all-time series with the Eagles at 4-4 if they win in St. Paul on April 30 to close the regular season.
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and
Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) got Superior on the scoreboard first with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Adam Ryerse and Jack Geurkink before Darin Rupp and Tyrus Studer beat
Gus Rasmussen (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and
Jace Gilbertson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior), 8-6, at No. 3. UWS went into singles action up 2-1, on the strength of an 8-7 (7-2) win over Stewart Morrell and Jacob Weddle on court two.
Luiz de Melo Guedes made it 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Ryerse at No. 2 singles. After UNW knotted the match 3-3, with wins at Nos. 1 and 3,
Keisuke Sato (Fukushima, Japan/Fukushima) made it 4-3 with a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4) win on court four.
Northwestern (17-5, 4-1) again battled back to tie the match with a Studer straight-set win at No. 6, but Gilbertson clinched the match with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win on court five.
The Yellowjackets are back in action Friday at 4 p.m. against Minnesota Morris at the Yellowjackets Outdoor Tennis Complex.
