SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The UW-Superior men's tennis team clinched at least a share of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season championship with a 9-0 victory over Minnesota Morris at Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse on Friday.
The Yellowjackets (13-5, 7-0 UMAC) can take the title outright if they defeat Northwestern Sunday at Lifetime Athletic Club in White Bear Lake, Minn.
UWS won all matches in straight sets, surrendering just four games to the Cougars (1-10, 1-7).
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and
Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) beat Nick Garmen and Matt Gearou, 8-1, in No. 1 doubles while
Michael Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) and
Keisuke Sato (Fukushima, Japan/Fukushima) topped Kenny Knudson and Carver Hammond by the same score.
Gus Rasmussen (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and
Jace Gilbertson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) won by default to take a 3-0 lead into singles action.
Janes swept Gearou, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, Luiz de Melo Guedes beat Garmen, 6-0, 6-1 on court two and Potz Nagy swept Knudson on court three.
Sato dispatched Ryan Sajulga, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 and Gilbertson beat Hammond 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5.
Carter LaMont (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) won by default on court six to close the match.
