VIRGINIA, Minn. -- The UW-Superior men's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match with a 9-0 non-conference victory over Concordia (Minn.) on Sunday at the Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Club.
The win, which improves the Yellowjackets to 8-4 overall on the season, is their third straight sweep. UWS dropped one set on the day, losing just 15 total games. Superior also benefited from the Cobbers playing with seven players. As a result, the No. 3 doubles tandem of sophomore
Gus Rasmussen (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and freshman
Jace Gilbertson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) as well as junior
Carter LaMont (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) at No. 6 singles won their matches by default.
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes and
Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) beat Concordia's Jake Peters and Eli Simonson, 8-1, while
Keisuke Sato (Fukushima, Japan/Fukushima) and
Michael Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) won by the same count over Kipton Jenson and Sean Martin at No. 2.
Luiz de Melo Guedes opened singles action topping Martin, 6-0, 6-1, on court two. Potz Nagy then beat Simonson, 6-0, 6-2.
Gilbertson defeated Logan Voigt at No. 5, 6-0, 6-2, prior to Janes dispatching Peters, 6-1, 6-1.
Sato closed the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over Jenson.
Concordia fell to 1-15 on the year with the loss.
UWS next hosts St. Olaf at the Yellowjackets Outdoor Tennis Complex Saturday at 11 a.m.
