MINNEAPOLIS -- The second seeded UW-Superior women's tennis team earned its first-ever berth in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championship match with a 5-0 victory over Minnesota Morris in the semifinals at Baseline Tennis Center on Friday.
The Yellowjackets (8-14) will face Northwestern Saturday at 1 p.m. with the league's automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament on the line. The Eagles were 5-0 winners over Martin Luther on Friday.
The top pair of
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior) and
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) beat Kiley Rodarmel and Kate Obright, 8-1, to open doubles action.
Kaytlyn Syverson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and
Shelby Hanson (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior) then beat BeBe Say and Marybeth Tautges at No. 3, 8-2.
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) and
Lainey Zurn (Almena, Wis./Barron) closed doubles with an 8-4 win over Megan Arens and Abby Burquest on court two.
Callaway dispatched Rodarmel, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles go put her team up, 4-0, and Hanson clinched the match at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Say.
The third-seeded Cougars' season ends at 5-7 overall.
