DE PERE, Wis. -- The UW-Superior men's tennis team picked up a 7-2 victory over St. Norbert at the Green Bay Tennis Center on Sunday to stay undefeated at 5-0 overall.
The Yellowjackets swept all three doubles matches to open play as freshman
Mateo Abarca Pino (Riobamba, Ecuador/El Despertar) and sophomore
Frederick Diehl (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) topped Josh Brown and Joe Pellechia, 8-2, on court three and
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and
Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) defeated Anthony Michels and David Vandenberg, 8-2, at No. 2.
Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and
Ren Kurachi (Yokohama, Japan/Yokosuka Gakuin) closed doubles with a win at No. 1 against Brett Daniels and Brian Coulter, 8-4.
Kurachi extended the lead to 4-0 with a win at No. 2 singles versus former Yellowjacket Michels, 6-3, 6-1. Guetten Chaves then dispatched Daniels at No. 1, 6-4, 6-1, for a 5-0 advantage.
Senior
Keisuke Sato (Fukushima, Japan/Fukushima) beat Brown, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 for Superior's sixth point and
Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) made it 7-0 with another 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 against Pellechia.
Benedek Kaibas (Salgótarján, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium) and Miranda Silvestre dropped a pair of third-set tiebreakers on courts four and five, respectively, as the Green Knights (4-3) avoided the sweep. Kaibas lost to Coulter, 1-6, 6-2, 10-7, and Miranda Silvestre lost to Vandenberg, 3-6, 2-7, 10-6.
UWS opens Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play against Minnesota Morris on Saturday at 2 p.m., in Fargo, N.D., before also facing Concordia (Minn.) at 5:30 p.m.
