FARGO, N.D. -- The UW-Superior men's tennis team won a pair of matches Saturday, sweeping both Minnesota Morris and Concordia (Minn.) at Courts Plus Community Fitness.
The Yellowjackets (7-0, 1-0 UMAC) took down the Cougars by only dropping 10 games in the match.
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and
Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) topped Matt Gearou and Clayton Klema, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles while
Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and
Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) dispatched Carver Hammond and Marshall O'Meara at No. 2 by the same count.
Making his collegiate debut with sophomore
Frederick Diehl (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels),
Simon Potapov (Noginsk, Russia/Feniks Secondary General School) helped defeat Will Marsan and Max Max Gmuender, 8-1, to finish off double action.
Guetten Chaves topped Gearou in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0,
Ren Kurachi (Yokohama, Japan/Yokosuka Gakuin) shut out Klema, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 as did
Benedek Kaibas (Salgótarján, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium) against O'Meara at No. 3.
Jace Gilbertson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) beat Hammond, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and
Lorenzo Korehisa Silva (São Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Singular-Santo Andre) defeated Marsan, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5.
Miles Dempsey (Golden, Colo./Green Mountain) topped Gmuender, 6-0, 6-0 to complete the sweep of the Cougars (1-3, 0-1).
Luiz de Melo Guedes and Zacharias blanked the Cobbers' Atticus Baker and Brady Cannon at No. 2 double to open the second match of the day, while Diehl and
Mateo Abarca Pino (Riobamba, Ecuador/El Despertar) topped Mattthew Nemer and Tyson Aberle, 8-4 at No. 3. Guetten Chaves and Kurachi then beat Logan Sandberg and Kai Pierce by the same score to close doubles play.
Kurachi surrendered just one game to Baker at No. 3 singles, and Luiz de Melo Guedes beat Pierce at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the match.
Sakakibara dropped just one game in the first set to Nemer on court four prior to Zacharias shutting out Aberle, 6-0, 6-0.
Guetten Chaves then outlasted Sandberg at No. 1, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 10-3 and Keisuke beat Cannon, 6-2, 6-1, to close the match.
Concordia fell to 2-4 on the season with the loss.
Superior returns to action next Saturday at Concordia (Wis.) at 1 p.m.
