Yellowjackets Take Down Concordia Wisconsin, Carroll to Stay Unbeaten

MEQUON, Wis. – The Yellowjacket men's tennis team just keeps on rolling, and after sweeping a pair of non-conference matches Saturday, remains unbeaten in 2023.

The Yellowjackets (9-0, 1-0 UMAC) swept Concordia University Wisconsin 9-0 to open play Saturday, before having a little more pushback in a 6-3 win over Carroll.

Against Concordia, the Yellowjackets got their winning ways started early when Benedek Kaibas (Salgótarján, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium) and Mateus Miranda Silvestre (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Torricelli) took down Nathan Bilan and Jordan Wright, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) had little trouble at No. 2 doubles, defeating Isaac Bruins and Dylan Nadolski 8-2.

Concordia pushed the Yellowjackets hard at No. 1 doubles, where Ren Kurachi (Yokohama, Japan/Yokosuka Gakuin) and Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) needed a tiebreaker to defeat Landon Sather and Joshua Klement 8-7. Kurachi and Guetten Chaves won the tiebreaker 7-5.

In the singles matches the Yellowjackets had little difficulty completing the sweep.

Guetten Chaves defeated Klement 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Luiz de Melo Guedes had a tougher time at No. 2 singles, but still earned a straight-sets win over Nadolski by scores of 6-3, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, Kurachi defeated Bruins 6-4, 6-1, and at No. 4 singles Sakakibara swept Bilan by scores of 6-2, 6-2.

The final match of the day went to Simon Potapov (Noginsk, Russia/Feniks Secondary General School) at No. 5 singles, as he defeated Wright 6-1, 6-3. Dominik Hendrickson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) was slated to play at No. 6 singles, but his opponent withdrew, giving him the win via forfeit.

Things were a little tougher for the Yellowjackets in the second match of the day against Carroll.

The No. 1 doubles team of Guetten Chaves and Kurachi was handed just its second loss of the season, falling to Andrew and Ryan Labelle 2-8. Luiz de Melo Guedes and Zacharias got that point back, however, defeating David Eman and Jack McCaffery 8-2. The Yellowjackets moved in front at the end of the doubles portion of the day. In the tightest doubles match of the evening, Kaibas and Miranda Silvestre needed a 7-2 win in a tiebreaker to defeat Luke Barter and Layton Carls 8-7.

The match shifted to the singles and the Labelle's continued their dominance of the day for Carroll.

Guetten Chaves fell to Andrew Labelle in straight sets at No. 1 singles, losing 0-6, 2-6. It was the same story at No. 2 singles. Luiz de Melo Guedes dropped his match to Ryan Labelle, losing 1-6, 6-4, 0-1, with Labelle taking the tiebreaker 10-6.

The Yellowjackets got back to their winning ways the rest of the way. Kurachi earned the win over Eman at No. 3 singles, taking the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Sakakibara swept McCaffery, 7-5, 6-1.

Zacharias provided the clinch for the Yellowjackets in the nightcap, sweeping Barter 7-5, 6-1. The Yellowjackets then closed out the day with Kaibas picking up the 6-2, 6-3 straight-sets win over Carls.

The Yellowjackets are back in action Sunday when they will take on Wisconsin Lutheran. The match will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley Tennis and Fitness Club in Jackson, Wis.
