MINNEAPOLIS -- The UW-Superior men's tennis team opened the 2023 dual-match season matches from Wartburg and Macalester at Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center Saturday.
The Yellowjackets (2-0) beat Wartburg, 8-1, and Macalester, 6-3.
Against the Knights, UWS won two of the three doubles matches with
Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) winning at No. 2, 8-6, and
Benedek Kaibas (Salgótarján, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium) and
Mateus Miranda Silvestre (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Torricelli) winning by the same score at No. 3.
In singles,
Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) won, 6-3, 7-5 from the top spot, Luiz de Melo Guedes won at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2, and
Ren Kurachi (Yokohama, Japan/Yokosuka Gakuin) won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2.
Zacharias went three sets to win at No. 4, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0,
Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) won, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 and Kaibas won at No. 6, 7-5, 7-5.
Against Macaleser, UWS won Nos. 1 and 2 doubles with the teams of Guetten Chaves and Kurachi and Luiz de Melo Guedes and Zacharias each winning, 8-6.
Guetten Chaves gave Superior a 3-2 lead in the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles. Sakakibara extended the advantage with a win at the fifth spot, 6-1, 6-1, Kurachi made it 5-2 with a three-set win at No. 3.
Kaibas won at No. 6, 6-2, 7-5 to close the match.
UWS returns to action next Saturday against Bethel in Rogers, Minn. First serve is 6 p.m.
