BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships got underway Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex, and Yellowjacket sophomore
Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage) is halfway through his competition in the heptathlon.

Lynch, in only his third time competing in heptathlon, finished the first day with 2,522 points, which is good for 15th place heading into day two.

Lynch started the day with a time of 7.31 seconds in the 60-meter dash, which gave him 775 points. He finished 11th out of 20 competitors in the event, his highest finish of the day in a single event.
After the 60-meter, Lynch earned 561 points in the long jump, with a mark of 5.88 meters, which placed him 17th. Lynch then had back-to-back 15th place finishes in the shot put and the high jump. In the shot put Lynch had a mark 11.63 meters. He closed his day in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 1.77 meters.

On day two of the NCAA Championships, Lynch will compete in three events – the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000 meter run.

Day two of the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be Saturday, with events beginning at 10 a.m. CST. Lynch will begin competing right at 10 a.m., while fellow Yellowjacket
Gage Stankiewicz (Esko, Minn./Esko), who will compete in the shot put, will begin at 11 a.m.
