Â
Match Two
The competition was a little stiffer in the second match of the day, as the Yellowjackets met Minnesota Morris for the second time on the year. The teams met in Fargo, N.D. Feb. 25, with the Cougars defeating the Yellowjackets 6-3.
The Yellowjackets were looking to avenge the earlier loss and got off to a good start in this one.
Â
Kukowski and Hanson got the Yellowjackets on the board first, defeating Abgby Burquest and Valerie Gall at No. 2 doubles, 8-4. Morris came back and tied it, however, when Megan Arens and Marybeth Tautges defeated Wilfong and Drew and No. 3 doubles, 8-4.
Â
The Yellowjackets moved in front of the Cougars, 2-1 at the conclusion of the doubles portion, when the No. 1 team of Tejada and Brandt defeated Kiley Rodarmel and Allison Bruhn 8-6.
Â
As singles play progressed, the Yellowjackets extended their lead. Kukowski rolled over Tautges by scores of 6-2 and 6-2. For Kukowski, the win improved her mark on the year to 7-2 in singles play.
Â
The Yellowjackets went ahead 4-1 in the match when Quick defeated Arens at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Â
Morris came back, however, with Burquest defeating Brandt at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-2 and Bruhn beating Dostal at No. 3 singles by an identical 6-4, 6-2 score. The Cougars tied things at 4-4 when Gall outlasted Wilfong in a wildly entertaining match. Gall won the opening set 6-4 before Wilfong evened things up, taking the second set 7-6 by winning the tiebreaker 9-7. The deciding third set also went to a tiebreaker, but Gall came out on top, winning 7-6 to take the match two sets to one.
That meant the win for the day was riding on No. 1 singles, where Tejada did battle with Rodarmel. Tejada was able to get the service break she needed to take the opening set 6-4, before pulling away in the second set, winning 6-2 and giving the Yellowjackets the match.
Â
The Yellowjackets are back home Sunday when they host Martin Luther in UMAC play. The opening serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.
