Yellowjackets Roll Past Crown, Morris in Men's Tennis Action

Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – For the first time this season, the Yellowjacket men's tennis team took to its home court, jumping into conference play with a pair of matches Saturday at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.

After suffering their first two losses of the season during their week in Florida, the Yellowjackets returned to their winning ways Saturday, and it didn't take long for them to accomplish it, either.

The Yellowjackets rolled over Crown College in their first match of the day, sweeping the Polars 9-0 in a little over an hour-and-a-half. In the second match of the day, things took a little longer, but the Yellowjackets again cruised to a 9-0 win, this time over the University of Minnesota Morris.

With the wins, the Yellowjackets improve to 15-2 overall and 3-0 in UMAC play.

Match One
It was all Yellowjackets from the get-go in this one, as they overmatched the Polars across the board.

In doubles play, it was the No.1 seeds who had the most difficulties with Crown. Mateus Miranda Silvestre (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Torricelli) and Benedek Kiabas started slowly but ultimately picked up the 8-3 win over David Comings and Tim Jaeger. There was less drama at No. 2, where Frederick Diehl (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) and Mateo Abarca Pino (Riobamba, Ecuador/El Despertar) defeated Titus Krech and Jackson McFaden 8-1. At No. 3 doubles, Miles Dempsey (Golden, Colo./Green Mountain) and Lorenzo Korehisa Silva (São Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Singular-Santo Andre) rolled over the pairing of Brock Knick and Cole Matthys, 8-0.

Playing at No. 1 singles for the first time this season, Keisuke Sato (Fukushima, Japan/Fukushima) earned the win over Comings in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2. Miranda Silvestre rolled at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Jaeger. Abarca Pino had little trouble with Krech at No. 3 singles, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

In his second match this season playing at No. 4 singles, Jace Gilbertson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) made quick work of Knick, with a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Diehl saw his first singles action of the year at No. 5 singles, and he rolled past McFaden 6-0, 6-1. In the final singles match of the day, Korehisa Silva had a clean game, downing Gabe Rojas Gomez 6-0, 6-0.

Match Two
In the second match, the Yellowjackets picked up right where they left off against Crown, rolling to a snappy win over Minnesota Morris.

Fielding a more familiar card in this one, the Yellowjackets swept the doubles matches in quick fashion. At No. 1, Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and ren Kurachi needed just minutes to defeat Matt Gearou and Clayton Klema, 8-1. Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) and Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) teamed up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-0 win over Carver Hammond and Marshall O'Meara. The sweep was delivered when the No. 3 doubles tandem of Miranda Silvestre and Kaibas rolled to an 8-1 win over Will Marsan and Max Gmuender, 8-1.

Guetten Chaves needed almost no time to pick up the win at No. 1 singles, rolling over Gearou 6-0, 6-0 to improve to 10-2 in singles play on the year. His doubles partner, Kurachi, also made quick work of his opponent, sweeping Klema 6-0, 6-0. Sakakibara joined the clean-card club, as well, sweeping No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 over O'Meara.

Zacharias earned his second win of the match at No. 4 singles, defeating Hammond 6-1, 6-0. Kaibas won 6-1, 6-1 over Marsan at No. 5 singles, while Gilbertson won his second singles match of the day, going over Gmuender 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Yellowjackets will be back home Sunday, as UMAC play continues with a visit by Martin Luther. The first serve is set for 1 p.m. at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.
