JACKSON, Wis. – It's a perfect 10 for the Yellowjacket men's tennis team, as in 10 consecutive wins following an 8-1 victory Saturday over Wisconsin Lutheran at the Pleasant Valley Tennis and Fitness Club.
The Yellowjackets (10-0, 1-0 UMAC) will now take their unbeaten start and winning streak into action in Florida next week.
The day started with the Yellowjackets taking all three doubles matches in convincing fashion.
At No. 1 doubles,
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and
Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) teamed up to take out Wisconsin Lutheran's top pair of Aidan Newberg and Zadic Torline by an 8-4 score.
Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and
Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) took their No. 2 doubles match over Jonathan Kannenberg and Bryce Halvorsen by an identical 8-4 score. The Yellowjackets made it a clean sweep in the doubles when Benedek Kiabas and
Mateus Miranda Silvestre (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Torricelli) blanked Matthew Bass and Conner Heezen 8-0.
Ren Kurachi (Yokohama, Japan/Yokosuka Gakuin) continued his strong first season with the Yellowjackets with a straight-sets win at No. 1 singles, defeating Newberg 6-3, 6-4. Sakakibara needed to go to a tiebreaker, but he defeated Kannenberg at No. 2 singles 6-3, 1-6 (10-8). After clinching the win over Carroll yesterday,
Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) swept Torline at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4.
Jace Gilbertson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) had little trouble with Bass at No. 5 singles, taking his match 6-1, 6-2. The same could be said for
Keisuke Sato (Fukushima, Japan/Fukushima), who won at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-1 over Heezen.
The only blemish of the afternoon for the Yellowjackets came at No. 4 singles, where Kaibas fell to Halvorsen in a pair of tiebreakers, 6-7 (5-7) and 6-7 (3-7).
Next up for the Yellowjackets is a trip to Florida and a date with WIAC foe UW-La Crosse Monday, Mar. 13. The first service is set for 8 a.m. CST from the Fort Gatlin Recreation Park in Orlando, Fla.
