SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced its weekly award winners Monday, and Yellowjacket junior
Matt Tappe (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) was named the UMAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Â
For Tappe, it is the first time he has received the weekly honor from the UMAC.
Â
After the Yellowjackets dropped a doubleheader to Minnesota Morris Friday, they turned to Tappe on the mound Saturday, and the sidewinder shut down the Cougars potent bats. Tappe pitched a brilliant complete game, allowing just five hits and zero runs as the Yellowjackets won 3-0. He didn't walk a hitter and struck out seven.
Â
The start was Tappe's first complete game of the season and fifth of his career.
Â
For the year, Tappe has won his last three starts and has a record of 4-2. In 36.2 innings, Tappe has allowed 44 hits to go along with just 10 walks and 36 strikeouts. He has an earned run average of 4.42.
Â
Tappe and the Yellowjackets return to action Wednesday when they travel to Saint Mary's in Winona, Minn. for a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch against the cardinals is set for 2:30 p.m.
