SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced its post-season award winners in women's tennis Wednesday, and Yellowjacket freshman
Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) had a big day to cap her remarkable first season at UW-Superior.
Â
Tejada received two of the conference's major awards, earning honors as both the UMAC Player of the Year and UMAC Rookie of the Year. To top it off, Tejada was named All-UMAC First Team, the only Yellowjacket to be named to the team.
Â
In addition to Tejada,
Courtney Brandt (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior) was named All-UMAC Second Team. Freshman
Marina Dostal (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) received All-UMAC honorable mention.
Â
Tejada finished the 2023 season with a singles record of 12-9, tying her for the most singles victories among Yellowjackets. All of Tejada's matches were played in the No. 1 singles position. After starting the season with four consecutive losses, Tejada caught fire and won 12 of her last 17 matches and closed the season with a nine-match winning streak.
Â
In doubles play, Tejada finished the year with a 10-9 mark, but hit her stride when head coach
CeeJay Schaffner paired her with Brandt. The duo went 10-4 at the No. 1 doubles position, making them one of the top pairs in the UMAC.
Â
Brandt received All-UMAC Second Team honors after posting a 7-15 record in singles play, but the higher up she played, the stronger Brandt was, going 4-4 at No. 2 singles. In doubles play, Brandt finished the year with a mark of 11-14 playing with three different partners.
Â
Dostal was another player who got stronger as the season went on, winning four of her final five matches on the way to All-UMAC honorable mention.
Â
Shelby Hanson (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea Senior) was the UW-Superior entry on the UMAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Yellowjacket women finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 10-13 and were 7-3 in UMAC play. They finished in a tie for second place in the UMAC North Division before falling to Minnesota Morris in the UMAC play-in match.
