Box Score 2 MENOMONIE, Wis, -- The UW-Superior women's tennis team opened its season Sunday on the road in Menomonie where they faced UW-Stout and UW-River Falls.
The Yellowjackets starting off their season with an 8-1 win over UW-Stout and shutting out UW-River Falls 9-0.
Match 1
The pairing of
Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) and
Maya Haupt () got things started for the Yellowjackets Sunday, winning doubles over Stout's Ellie Becker and Ella Lampa, 8-6. Continuing the success for the 'Jackets, Gilulia Barros and
Claudia Curtis () defeated Ashlyn Dellemann and Lexie Stein of the Blue Devils, 8-1. Rounding out the doubles matches, Halle Bruggeman and Maddie Westerholm of UW-Stout took down
Stella Harris () and
Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) for the Yellowjackets, 8-3.
Things were equally as impressive in singles for the Yellowjackets.
Tejada won both sets against Becker of UW-Stout with final scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Haupt almost had a perfect shutout over Dellemann of the Blue Devils, finishing with scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Curtis would win in straight sets against, Stein, 6-4 and 6-0.
Rounding it out for the Yellowjackets,
Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) would defeat Lampa of Stout in straight set, 6-4 and 6-0. Barros would take down Brugeman in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-0. For the final match against UW-Stout
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) would defeat Claire Dickie in matching straight sets 6-2 and 6-2.
Match 2
Starting with doubles, Tejada and Haupt opened with a win, defeating Sydney Wiener and Chloe Struss of River Falls 8-5. Giulia Barros and
Claudia Curtis () would convincingly take the win over Alicia Langbehn and Sarah Baker, 8-1. Rounding out the doubles, Jessi Kukowsi and
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) would take the 8-6 win over Kennedy Zeifert and Grace Aerts.
In singles play the Yellowjackets would continue to dominate sweeping the Falcons in all six matches. Starting with Tejada, who would take the win in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1. Haupt was next with quick straight-sets over Struss, 6-0 and 6-2. Curtis would gain her second win of the day in singles, 6-3 and 6-3, defeating Baker.
Rounding off singles play for the Yellowjackets, Kukowsi would take a straight sets win over Langbehn, 6-2 and 6-2. Barros would make it quick against Aerts, winning in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1. With the last set and match of the day, Drew would deliver the final victory with straight sets over Zeifert 6-2 and 6-2 to shut out the Falcons, 9-0.
The Yellowjackets are back in action Sept. 22-25 at the Warhawk Outdoor Tennis Complex for the ITA Midwest Regional in Whitewater, Wis.
