Women's Soccer Rallies Back to Down Bethany Lutheran
SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's soccer team returned to their home pitch Saturday, playing host to Bethany Lutheran in a crucial Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) match. The only team in the conference to defeat the 'Jackets was BLC, who earned a 3-2 win on Sept. 28 in Mankato.
UWS would handle business against their next three conference matches, scoring 21 goals and allowing just one leading to Saturday's contest. Looking to avenge their loss against the Vikings, the 'Jackets came into the match with a vengeance. After the Vikings went up 1-0 in the first five minutes of play, the Yellowjackets had some ground to make up.
And they certainly did.
Two first-half goals from UW-Superior proved to be the difference, as the Yellowjackets grabbed their eighth conference victory of the season, defeating the Vikings 2-1 at Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium.
Match Notes
- Nearly five minutes ticked off the scoreboard in the opening half, and the Yellowjackets found themselves down 1-0 after allowing an own goal.
- From there the 'Jacket offense turned things up a notch, taking three shots and testing Vikings goalkeeper Arayah Baker.
- Notching her second goal of the season was Julia Lindow (Richfield, Minn./Richfield), who shook past a BLC defender and fired a shot perfectly into the top left corner of the net, notching things up at a goal apiece.
- Approximately five minutes later UWS struck again. Halle Carlson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) sent a pass to Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake), who crossed it into Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo), firing a header past Baker to garner her 14th goal of the campaign.
- The Yellowjackets deployed a balanced attack in the second half, allowing just four shots from the opposition and rifling six of their own.
- UWS's backline was in the right place at the right time Saturday, as both Brenna Mattson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) and Meagan Bergerson (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) gave valiant efforts shutting down the Vikings' forwards on their way to a 2-1 victory.
- Holmquist is now the leading scorer for the Yellowjackets, sitting in first place after her goal at the 39th minute.
- Quinn Clark (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) received the start in net, making one save on the afternoon.
- Holmquist, alongside Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior), saw all of their shot attempts reach the mark. Holmquist finished with three, while Wilson fired two.
The 'Jackets continue conference play Tuesday, traveling to Eliot Park Field to face North Central. The opening kick is set for 3:30 p.m.
