Yellowjackets Down the Pipers 3-1

SUPERIOR, Wis. The University of Wisconsin women's hockey team returned to action at Wessman Arena on Friday afternoon, facing the No.15 ranked Hamline Pipers. In a hard-fought matchup, the Yellowjackets came away with a well-earned 3-1 victory.

Yellowjacket's goaltender Anna Maulson (Lac du Flambeau, Wis./Lakeland Union) had an outstanding performance, securing the win in net. Maulson was exceptional, making several crucial saves to keep the 'Jackets in the game. She finished the game with an impressive 49 saves and now holds a 2-0-0 record for the season.

Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) opened and closed the scoring for the Yellowjackets. Early in the second period, just two minutes in, Avery Olenik (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) sent a pass to Garner in front of the net, where she fired a shot into the top left corner, beating the Hamline goalie's blocker. Then, late in the third period, Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) came off the bench, rushing the puck into the Pipers' zone. She slid it over to Garner in front, who lifted it over the goaltender's blocker, extending the Yellowjackets' lead to 3-1.

Game Notes
  • Hamline took control early in the game, dominating the first period and outshooting the Yellowjackets 12-2. Their aggressive play kept the pressure on, setting the tone with a strong offensive push right from the start.
  • In the 16th minute of the second period, Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) doubled the Yellowjackets' lead. Gaby Andreacchi (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick) fired a shot from the corner toward the net, where the puck got lost behind the Hamline goaltender. Booth quickly spotted the loose puck and tapped it into the back of the net, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Pipers closed the gap in the eighth minute of the third period with a 5-on-3 power-play goal, bringing them within one. However, Garner secured the win for the Yellowjackets with her second goal in the 19th minute, sealing the game.
  • The Yellowjackets faced relentless offensive pressure throughout the game, being outshot 49-12 by the Pipers. Despite the lopsided shot count, the Yellowjackets' defense and goaltending held strong, ultimately securing the victory in a hard-fought battle.
  • The Pipers had a significant advantage in power-play opportunities, with seven chances compared to just one for the Yellowjackets. Despite this disparity, the Yellowjackets' penalty kill unit performed admirably, limiting the Pipers' scoring and helping to preserve their lead.
The Yellowjackets return to the ice on Saturday, Nov. 9, for another non-conference matchup against Augsburg. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
