DULUTH, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's track and field team headed across the bridge and had a strong showing at the CSS early bird at the Burns Wellness Commons. It was a strong performance for the Yellowjackets highlighted by individual victories and solid performances across multiple events.
Simone Stephens (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) was a standout for the Yellowjackets, winning the 5000 meters and setting the tone for a strong distance group. Stephens dominated the 5000-meter race, claiming first place with an outstanding time of 19:20.13, finishing over 20 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.
Meet Note
- Cora Hudella (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) (22:02.23) and Tea Boerner (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) (22:02.26) crossed the line in fourth and fifth respectively, showcasing their resilience in the 5000-meter.
- Julia Radmacher of Minnesota Duluth finished behind Stephens in second with a time of 19:41:12 in the 5000-meter.
- Cora Schmitz (Luck, Wis./Unity) was the top finisher for UW-Superior in the 60-meter dash, placing 22nd with a time of 8.66.
- In the one-mile race, Lilley Smith (Ironwood, Mich./Ironwood) represented UW-Superior with a time of 6:20.31, securing 11th place.
- Schmitz again led the team with a time of 29.70 in the 200-meter dash, followed by Maddelyn Swanson (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) (31.15) and Lillianna Jones (Portage, Wis./Portage) (31.58).
- Moving on to field events, starting with pole vault, Kayela Putnam (Stephenson, Mich./Stephenson) cleared 2.65 meters, earning a tie for fifth.
- Teammates Hannah Hutton (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) and Keira Hesseldahl (International Falls, Minn./Falls) also cleared 2.65m, securing seventh and eighth places, respectively.
- In the high jump, Bel Dimaze (Monticello, Minn./Spectrum) shone with a fourth-place finish, clearing 1.50 meters while Myla Volk (Wabeno, Wis./Wabeno) followed in sixth with 1.40 meters.
- Jumping over to the triple jump, Summer Hesseldahl (International Falls, Minn./Falls) jumped 5.00m, securing 10th place, with Volk finishing 15th at 4.68 meters.
- Over to throwing, Sydney Cox (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) was the top thrower for UW-Superior, hitting a mark of 9.65 meters to take 20th place. Isabel Miller (Medford, Minn./Medford) followed closely with 8.84 meters.
- Throwing shot put, Miller threw for 8.35 meters, while Cox posted a mark of 8.29 meters, rounding out the team's effort in 28th and 29th, respectively.
The Yellowjackets return to action on January 18, when they host the Twin Ports Open at the Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse. Events are set to begin at 11 a.m.
