DULUTH, Minn. – For the first time this season, the Yellowjacket women's tennis team didn't have to travel hours to get a match in. Instead, they just went across the river, taking on Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica at the Duluth Indoor Sports Complex (DISC).
Â
The DISC will be familiar to the Yellowjackets after the weekend, as they will be three for three straight days, beginning with Friday's matchup with the Saints.
Â
Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets it was all Saints Friday, as St. Scholastica swept the Yellowjackets 9-0.
Â
The duo of
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and Katie Jonas played a tight match at No. 3 doubles, but Taylor Vyskocil and Chloe Hasbargen outlasted them to get the win.
Â
In singles play, Giulia Araujo de Barros dropped her opening set, 3-6 to Katie Bartels at No. 5 singles. She came roaring back in the second set to take it 6-0 and force the tiebreaker. The two traded points throughout, but Bartels got the necessary service break, winning the tiebreaker 11-9 to take the match.
Â
Match Notes
- Maya Haupt (Nuertingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg/Hoelderlin Gymnasium Nuertingen) teamed up with Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) at No. 1 doubles and were within striking distance at 6-5, but the formidable Yellowjacket duo fell to Anna Ritchie and Julia Maier after the Saints took the final two games.
- Haupt and Tejada played at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles, respectively, but they fell by identical scores of 2-6, 1-6.
- Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) and Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) teamed up at No. 2 doubles, and played singles at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots respectively.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is a match against UW-Stevens Point. The first serve is set for noon Saturday at DISC.
