DULUTH, Minn. – The Yellowjacket men's tennis team returned to the Duluth Indoor Sports Center (DISC) Sunday, capping their weekend with a match against the Cobbers from Concordia College. The 'Jackets picked up victories against St. Scholastica Friday and UW-Stevens Point Saturday, and their momentum rolled into Sunday, defeating the Cobbers 9-0.
The 'Jackets (7-3) picked up their first sweep of the 2023-24 campaign, ending their weekend on a high note at the DISC.
Match Notes
- Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and Ren Kurachi (Yokohama, Japan/Yokosuka Gakuin) teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Cobbers' best duo of Logan Sandberg and Kai Pierce 8-4.
- The tandem of Sharan Kanugovi (Bangalore, Karnataka/New Baldwin International School) and Davide Pelletti (Prado, Brazil) picked up an 8-5 victory over Kai Kringlie and Isaac Maddock in the second position.
- At No. 3 doubles, Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Miles Dempsey (Golden, Colo./Green Mountain) downed Hunter Rice and Daniel Skrade by an 8-4 decision.
- Transitioning to singles action, Kurachi downed Sandberg 6-1, 6-3 at the first spot.
- Guetten Chaves powered past Pierce 6-1, 6-1 for his fifth-straight victory.
- Kanugovi's match required a tiebreaker, as he fell 3-6 to Maddock before rallying to win 6-3 and securing the win 10-6.
- Yash Chhabra (Jaipur, Rajasthan/Sanskar School) was slotted at No. 4 singles Sunday, defeating Kringlie 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
- Earning his fifth-straight victory was Zacharias, who won 6-4, 6-4 against Hunter Rice.
- Cullen Brown (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) won his second singles match as a Yellowjacket, defeating Daniel Skrade 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 6 position.
The Yellowjackets return to action Friday against Luther. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minn.
