Five Yellowjackets Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) released its athletes of the week honors for the week of Mar. 11, and the Yellowjackets saw five student-athletes receive recognition.

Baseball's Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael) picked up the conference's pitcher of the week award, while Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), Summer Hesseldahl (International Falls, Minn./Falls), Nate Ohman (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) and Sydney Cox (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) swept the track and field honors.

Romans toed the rubber in the 'Jackets' final game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Versus William Paterson of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), he pitched 4.1 innings allowing seven hits on two runs, one walk and ten strikeouts. Romans was tabbed with a no-decision in the contest.

Schorr had a solid weekend of competition, as the 'Jackets entered the Betty S. Rogers Spring Break Invite hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University. Schorr was the only Yellowjacket to qualify for the 100-meter dash, finishing with a preliminary time of 11.25 and clocking an 11.33 in the finals Saturday. His most notable performances came in the relays, however, as Schorr helped the Yellowjackets finish with times of 1:30.42 in the 4x200 and 43.38 in the 4x100 meter-races. These finishes set new school records that were set in 2010 and 1989, respectively.

Hesseldahl was a member of both the 4x200 and 4x100 relay squads, earning second place finishes of 1:55.08 and 59.92, respectively. Hesseldahl also picked up medalist honors in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 1:19.25. This time set her just over two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Ohman snagged the gold in both the shot put and hammer throw over the break. He finished with a heave of 47.73 meters in the hammer, giving him a five-meter cushion from the rest of the field. Ohman's mark of 15 meters in the shot put also landed him a championship, beating the rest of the field by 2.3 meters.

Cox picked up two top-five finishes at the Betty S. Rogers Spring Break Invite over the weekend. She snagged a third-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 31.32 meters while placing fifth in the shot put with a heave of 8.97 meters.

The Yellowjacket baseball team are back in action Friday, opening UMAC action with the LumberJacks of Northland College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at LumberJack field.

The Yellowjacket men's and women's track and field teams will prepare for the Saint John's Invitational, scheduled for Thursday, Mar. 28 in Collegeville, Minn.
