Yellowjackets Sweep Northland to Commence UMAC Action

MAUSTON, Wis. – After a week-long trip to the Sunshine State of Florida, the Yellowjacket baseball team returned to their home state and began Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play versus Northland College. Both teams would travel to the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston Thursday, a place the Yellowjackets and LumberJacks are no strangers to.

Thursday's games fell in favor of the 'Jackets, as they picked up two victories by scores of 12-2 and 11-0. Both contests only took seven innings.

Game One Notes
  • The LumberJacks threatened early, loading the bases in the bottom of the second inning. Nevertheless, Yellowjacket starting pitcher Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael) picked up the final two outs of the inning.
  • UWS struck in the top of the fourth, beginning with a double from Isaac Fugere (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East). He would get cashed in thanks to Will Czech's (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) RBI single.
  • Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior) drilled a triple later in the inning, scoring Voight and Czech. The Yellowjackets would hit back-to-back doubles by Nick Fredrikson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) and Noah Dagostino (Andover, Minn./Andover), scoring five runs on five hits in the frame.
  • Northland once again had runners on base in the bottom of the fourth, but Romans was able to escape the jam. During the fifth, Northland picked up their lone two runs of the ball game.
  • The 'Jackets tagged four more runs on five hits in the top half of the sixth, with Fredrikson, Payton Steiner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo), Trey Sybrant (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville Senior) and Czech receiving RBIs.
  • Romans gave way to Aiden Pfeifer (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) who finished up the first game. Romans pitched five innings allowing just two runs, while Pfeifer only allowed one hit and one walk.
  • Fredrikson led the offense in game one, going 3-5 with two RBIs.
  • Czech, Dagostino, Fugere and O'Dwyer each finished with two hits.

Game Two Notes
  • Action resumed right away for the 'Jackets, tagging Northland's starting pitcher Ethan Boyce for four runs. Fredrikson singled, followed by a Dagostino walk. Steiner would notch a triple to right center field to drive them in before Fugere reached on an error and Czech notched an infield single.
  • The Yellowjacket bats would go quiet for a few innings before Jordan Trimble (Victorville, Calif./Grandview (Colo.)) collected a pinch hit single to center field. He would score on a sacrifice fly from O'Dwyer.
  • The top of the sixth inning was the final blow to the LumberJacks, as Fugere singled down the left field line to score two. Czech would then blast his first home run as a Yellowjacket to left field, scoring Fugere and Steiner.
  • Welle picked up his first victory of the season, pitching a complete shutout allowing just three hits on the afternoon.
  • Dagostino and Czech each went 3-4 in the contest.
  • After today's wins, the Yellowjackets hold an eight-game winning streak against the LumberJacks.

The Yellowjackets (7-8, 2-0 UMAC) will now prepare for non-conference action versus Saint Mary's Tuesday. Doubleheader action is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Max Molock Field.
