SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Yellowjackets saw two student-athletes claim Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) honors, as the conference released its winners for the week of Feb. 26 in an announcement Tuesday.
Â
Freshman
Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) from the Yellowjacket women's tennis team won the conference's north division award, while senior
Isaac Fugere (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) from the Yellowjacket baseball team claimed player of the week.
Â
Curtis was on her game this past weekend, as the Yellowjackets faced off against Simpson, UW-Eau Claire and Ripon. In singles action Curtis won all three matches at the No. 3 position. She defeated both Simpson and Ripon by identical 6-1, 6-3 decisions. It took a tiebreaker to finish off her Blugold counterpart, but she got the job done with scores of 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-4). In doubles action, Curtis teamed up with
Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and claimed two-of-three doubles matches, sweeping Simpson and Ripon 8-0.
Â
Thanks to record-breaking temperatures in the Midwest, the Yellowjacket baseball team was able to get outside and play five games prior to their spring trip in Florida. Facing off against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) teams Saint John's and Augsburg, the Yellowjackets claimed a record of 3-2. Leading the offensive output for UWS was Fugere, who finished the week batting .500 (8-for-16). He clubbed three doubles and hit his first two home runs of the season, capping the week with nine RBIs. He currently sits with a slugging percentage of 1.063 and an on-base percentage of .474.
Â
Both squads will be back in action as they travel to Florida for their respective spring trips. The Yellowjacket women's tennis team will face off against UW-La Crosse Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. CT at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The Yellowjacket baseball team will commence their spring trip against Concordia College. First pitch is scheduled for Sunday at 8:45 p.m. CT in Davenport, Fla.
