Yellowjacket Men Win Six Events at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. – The outdoor season is off to a good start for the Yellowjacket men's track and field team.
 
The 'Jackets had a strong showing over spring break at their meet in Virginia Beach and followed that with a good performance at Hamline a week ago. The roll kept going Saturday, as the Yellowjackets competed at Saint Mary's and brought home a load of top finishes on the day.
 
 
Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), who had a big week at Hamline last week, picked up right where he left off, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.94 seconds. Ed Hakanson also earned a top-five finish in the race, placing fifth with a time of 11.23 seconds. Hakanson shaved .33 seconds off his time from last week, giving him a new personal record.
 
It was all Yellowjackets in the 400 meters, as they occupied every slot in the top five. Iain Matheson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) was the winner, crossing the line with a time of 52.59 seconds, edging teammate Joel Thomas (Cardiff, Wales/Islwyn), who placed second with a time of 52.76 seconds. Bryce Boldt (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) (52.98 seconds), Garrett Kroells (Green Isle, Minn./Sibley East) (53.63) and Marshall Swanson (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) (57.68) rounded out the top five. Thomas, Boldt and Kroells all set personal records in the event.
 
Aidan Doherty (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) claimed victory in the 1,500 meters, coming in with a time of 4:19.26. He was more than two seconds ahead of the race's runner-up and set a new personal record. David Collins (Ironwood, Mich./Luther L. Wright) rounded out the top three, placing third with a time of 4:23.17.
 
Kieran Johnson (South Range, Wis./Northwestern) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line with a time of 10:36.49, setting a new personal record. Cale Newby (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) placed third in the event, posting a time of 10:49.15, also a personal record.
 
Moving to the field events, it was another great day for senior thrower Nate Ohman (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern). Ohman won the shot put with a heave of 14.47 meters, bettering the field by more than three full meters. Ohman placed second in the discus (36.98 meters) and fifth in the hammer throw (39.49 meters) to round out his day.

The final win for the Yellowjackets Saturday came from Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum), who claimed victory in the javelin with a throw of 52.17 meters. Foster bettered the field by nearly six meters.
 
Meet Notes
  • In total, the Yellowjackets won six events on the day.
  • The 4-x-100-meter relay team of Ethan Westimayer (Laona, Wis./Laona), Schorr, Jordan Goldfine (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and Hakanson placed third with a time of 43.98 seconds.
  • Westimayer finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.52 seconds. Kroells was sixth in the same event.
  • Dylan Uitto (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) finished third in the 800 meters, finishing two laps in 2:00.32.
  • The Yellowjackets had two teams in the 4-x-400-meter relay. Matheson, Ethan DeFoe (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), Colling and Thomas were second with a time of 3:42.95, while Doherty, Johnson, Newby and Dominick Meisner (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) were third, finishing in 3:57.38.
  • Ben Babcock (Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area) placed third in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.65 meters. He was also the runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 12.70 meters.
  • Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage) was second in the pole vault with a mark of 4.05 meters. Jason Thomas (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) finished tied for fifth.
  • Schorr and Goldfine placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the long jump.
  • Ohman was the top collegian in the discus, placing second behind an unattached thrower. Bo Waletzko (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and Carson Wilhorn (Necedah, Wis./Necedah) were fourth and fifth in the discus.
  • Wilhorn was the runner-up, and top collegian in the hammer throw with a mark of 42.13 meters.
Next, the Yellowjackets will compete at the Holst Invitational, hosted by Concordia-St. Paul at Sea Foam in St. Paul Saturday, April 20.
