DULUTH, Minn.—The Yellowjacket men's tennis team hosted the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) Friday afternoon at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center. After being scheduled to play outdoors Friday, the match was moved indoors due to the weather. The Yellowjackets battled some close sets with the Blugolds, but it was not enough. The Yellowjackets fall 6-3 for their final match of the regular season.
Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) at No.1 singles would clinch one of the wins for the Yellowjackets Friday. Guetten Chaves faced Demetri Bush for the Blugolds taking the match to a third-set tiebreaker. Guetten Chaves would drop the opening set 4-6 before rallying to take the second 6-2, forcing the tiebreaker. Guetten Chaves would secure the win in the tiebreaker 10-6.
The Yellowjackets would secure another win in the No.5 singles spot.
Davide Pelletti (Prado, Brazil) would secure the win in straight sets, needing a tiebreaker in the second to clinch the win. Pelletti would take the first set 6-4 and the second 7-6 (8-6) win over Sam Murillo of UWEC.
Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) would get the third win for the Yellowjackets at No.6 singles. Zacharias would take the first set 6-0 and the second 6-2.
Match Notes
- For the Yellowjackets at No.1 doubles, Pelletti and Sharan Kanugovi (Bangalore, Karnataka/New Baldwin International School) would give Hunter Roseth and Bush a close battle, but would fall 8-6.
- At No.2 doubles Gutten Chaves and Lucca Paladini (Blumenu, Brazil/Colegio Saber) fell short to the Blugolds, 8-4.
- Yash Chhabra (Jaipur, Rajasthan/Sanskar School) and Zacharias for the Yellowjackets took the loss at No.3 doubles, losing 8-3 against Ethan Wurtzel and Andrew Mueller.
- For the Yellowjackets, Paladini would take the fall 6-1 in both sets against Hunter Roseth at No.2 singles.
- At No.3 singles for the Yellowjackets, Kanugovi would fall in a close one with Pablo Rincon. Rincon took the first set 6-4 while Kanugovi took the second set 6-2. For the third set Rincon won 1-0 with a 10-3 tiebreaker.
- Chhabra would drop both sets, 6-3 against Otto Schluter of Eau Claire.
The Yellowjackets are back in action in St. Louis Friday, May 3 for the UMAC Championship. The opponent is still yet to be determined.
